This is a story of, not only a North Korean girl's journey to freedom, but also a thirteen-year-old girl's payment in order to live.
The main characters of this book are Yeonmi (the author), Eunmi (her elder sister), her mother and her father Park.
In order to live, Yeonmi had starvation diet resulting pellagra.
In order to live, she crossed icy river and frozen desert.
In order to live, she made a deal with the devil and was kidnapped.
In order to live, she sold her mother, with her mother's consent!
A thirteen-year-old girl became an adult and shouldered the responsibilities to save her family. So do I when I was thirteen. However, when compared with Yeonmi, in order to live, my payment was minimal.
It is a remarkable book to read, with tears, heartbreaking, inspiring, amazing stories.
