What is marijuana?

Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant  [Wikipedia]

Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indicaplant. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical THC and other similar compounds. Extracts can also be made from the cannabis plant. [National Institute of Drug Abuse]



1) Do the medical advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

The medical advantages of marijuana does NOT outweigh disadvantages.
Proven benefit is limited.



While there are numerous significant side effects.
Marijuana has both short-and long-term effects on the brain.
  • Short term: 
    • change in mood, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, impaired memory
    • hallucinations, delusions, psychosis
  • Long term:
    • affects brain development. When people begin using marijuana as teenagers
The blood carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body.

Moreover, we have alternatives in pain management, with lesser side effects.

  • family structure, life and death.   
  • Same-sex marriage
  • Organ donation
  • Euthanasia

"For direct use of cannabis, it should still be banned. For cannabinoids, although there are increasing evidence suggesting their role in treating refractory symptoms, the evidence is limited. Personally I suggest HK to follow FDA recommendation. So far as I know only Dronabinol (for anorexia-cachexia in AIDS and post chemo nausea and vomiting) and Nabilone (post chemo N&V not responding to other Rx) are approved. But honestly speaking, there are alternative options for same condition.
