Letters to seek humanitarian assistance

2 September 2019

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I write to seek humanitarian assistance from the international community in the face of escalating violence and conflicts between protesters, citizens and the police caused by the Hong Kong government’s decision to impose an extradition bill in February 2019.

A wide spectrum of people including protesters, students, citizens, first aid volunteers and police constables have been injured during the protests since 12 June 2019. Many injured protesters chose not go to hospitals to receive treatment because they were afraid of being arrested by the police.

Hong Kong is at risk of a humanitarian crisis. Our volunteer-based first aid teams - formed by healthcare professionals and citizens – were prevented from helping injured victims inside Kwun Tong and Prince Edward MTR stations on 31 August 2019. Regrettably, our government fails to ensure that volunteers have safe access and legal protection to all vulnerable groups as defined by the Geneva Conventions.

I, hereby, call on the non-government organizations to work with us to protect first aid volunteers in times of emergency and social unrest, when volunteers risk their own lives to save others. Should you need more information, please feel free to contact me via info@drchanpierre.org. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Pierre CHAN
Legislative Councillor (Medical)
