The Jumbo

On 14 June 2022, many people flocked to Aberdeen on Tuesday morning to take photos and bid farewell to Jumbo Floating Restaurant as it was being towed away from Hong Kong [1].

On 20 June, in a statement on Monday night, its parent company, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, said the vessel encountered stormy seas in waters near the disputed Xisha Islands on Saturday afternoon, causing it to partially sink [2].

On 23 June, the Marine Department said that, according to the information provided by the ship owner, on the night of June 18, when Jumbo was being towed by ocean-going tugboat "JAEWON 9" in the vicinity of Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, Jumbo capsized due to adverse weather. At present, both Jumbo and the tugboat are still in the waters off Xisha Islands [3-4].
